Leonardo Martinelli's Resumé

Leonardo Martinelli is a composer, professor, music critic and journalist. His works have been regularly featured in the main contemporary music events of Brazil, such as the Bienal de Musica Brasileira Contemporanea (or Biennial of Brazilian Contemporary Music, held in Rio de Janeiro) and the Festival Musica Nova (or New Music Festival, held in Sao Paulo), and performed by major Brazilian groups such as the Experimental Repertoire Orchestra, the Symphonic Band of Sao Paulo and the Piap Percussion Group.

He obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Music degree at the São Paulo State University (Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP) and is a professor of composition, music history, musical aesthetics, orchestration and organology in São Paulo renowned institutions such as the Escola Municipal de Música de São Paulo (or School of Music of the City of Sao Paulo) and Santa Marcelina College. In his work as professor a series of lectures and courses on different music subjects stands out.
He also acts intensively as a critic and journalist, and was a pioneer in Brazil in writing a blog entirely devoted to classical music, OutraMusica (http://alteramusica.blogspot.com, which could be translated as AnotherMusic), in 2005, which with thousands of visits a year. When he began to write for the Brazilian press, he worked for the Gazeta Mercantil’s Weekend Supplement and for French magazine Diapason’s Brazilian season. In 2006 he started to collaborate for Revista Concerto (Concert Magazine), the flagship publication of Brazil’s classical segment, which since 2009 has the rights to translate selected UK’s Gramophone articles. From then on he has worked extensively on the restructuring of the magazine, which since 2008 has been publishing a site with articles and exclusive content (www.concerto.com.br), and on the complete renovation of the editorial line, which since September 2009 has a new proposal and a new format. At the same time he took over the editorial assistance of Mbaraka, the music magazine of the Fundação Padre Anchieta de São Paulo (one of the most important culture foundation in Brazil, wich includes radio and television broadcasting).

On top of that, he acted as the curator of the Sesi-SP concerts in October 2009 and also took over the curatorship of the "Interfaces" module of the cycle of concerts of contemporary music of CPFL, with concerts in Campinas and at the Teatro Cultura Artística - Itaim, in Sao Paulo. Also in 2009 he participated in various projects of relevance to the musical scene, for instance as the musical director of the theatrical feature "Mahler's Conversion" (based on a play by Ronald Harwood), working on the "Great Masters of Classical Music" collection by Editora Abril, and on the project "Plural Music " (www.musicaplural.art.br), devoted entirely to works of the newest generation of Brazilian composers.

At present he is dedicated to teaching and to classical music journalism, besides working on the pre-production phase of various projects related to the theater and contemporary opera.
